What exactly is Viking Volunteers? |
 |
Viking Volunteers is an organization at Pecatonica High School that matches
students and volunteer opportunities. Some students find their own volunteer
activities and Viking Volunteer student coordinator simply records hours
and the activity. |
 |
I work and don't have much time. Can I still join Viking Volunteers? |
 |
Yes, each student determines how much time she/he is available to do volunteer
work. |
 |
What if I don't want to do a particular kind of activity? Do I get any
say in when and where and how long I volunteer? |
 |
Yes, before you are "volunteered" for an activity, you know
where, when, how long, and why you are volunteering and you can say yes
or no to that activity. |
 |
How is Viking Volunteers organized? |
 |
We have a student coordinator who works with the advisor to find volunteer
activities and who finds students to volunteer. We are considering having
a class reps who will help the student coordinator and share some of the
responsibilities. |
 |
I haven't heard any announcement about Viking Volunteers--what's going
on? |
 |
We are planning our fall kick-off for new members at the beginning of
2nd quarter. An email went to all 9th and 10th graders and in early November
we will have a sign-up. |
 |
So what's in it for me? |
 |
There are several benefits, but we'll highlight two. First, as you finish
high school and plan your post secondary options, students will often find
that volunteerism is VERY important in the awarding of scholarships and
grants. There are a lot of smart kids with good (great!) grades and ACT
scores. Often what distinguishes one student from another is the stuff that
happens outside of the classroom and volunteering can (and will) make a
difference for you. Second, starting young to be involved in your communities
by helping others who need help will give you experiences that will make
you a better, more thoughtful citizen--involved, compassionate, and dedicated
to making communities better places to live . Understanding why volunteerism
is vitally important in a society that emphasizes consumerism and individuals
will help you set your values, interests, and career plans. |
 |
I have a question, who should I talk to? |
 |
The adult advisor is Mrs. Simonson, the counselor. Beth Mcgowan is the
stdent coordinator. Either of them can answer questions. They hope you'll
become a Viking Volunteer--even if it's just a couple of hours a month. |
