Gifted and Talented

The Pecatonica Area School District is a small school district and does not have a full-time Gifted and Talented Coordinator. Instead, all teachers have been trained to identify and recognized academic and social areas of strength in our students and provide opportunities for enrichment and acceleration for all students.

Examples of how the school district meets the needs of GT students:
+ Grade 4-12 students, both those formally identified and those that are not, are provided enrichment opportunities through the Gifted & Talented Consortium at CESA 3;

+ Grade 4-8 students, both those formally identified and those that are not, are identified to participate in regional competitions in literacy/reading, mathematics and chemistry;

+ Grade 4-5 students are given the opportunity to extend mathematics and literacy learning through ALEKS software;

+ Grade K-5 students are provided opportunities to extend learning in all subject areas through additional enrichment activities provided by the classroom teacher or specialist;

+ Grade 6-8 students are accelerated in Reading, Language Arts/Writing, and/or Mathematics;

+ High School Students are allowed opportunities to take additional courses through UW Extension, UW Connections, APEX, and distance education, under the supervision of a Pecatonica High School teacher-mentor to explore topics of strength and interest;

+ High School Students may personalize their learning experience and work on an independent project with a Pecatonica teacher-mentor for credit, or not for credit;

+ High School Students have opportunities for workshops and job shadowing outside of the building to explore careers or interests;
